Being a travel blogger is crucial. How else can I show you the world as a wanderer via Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat if my WiFi is poor or non-existent? It's impossible! That's not okay. So, what do you think? Right?
However, in order to stay connected to the social web, I also need to be able access to other functionalities such as Google Maps, which can translate and the internet to find information while on the move. This isn't always easy, or inexpensive, if you've ever traveled abroad. It is not always convenient or ideal to rely on WiFi-enabled hotels, restaurants and shops. There is a Starbucks in every street, but you may not need it. Although you can buy a SIM card for any country, it is not the best value and can be quite expensive. Roaming fees are another issue if your phone is used internationally and you don't have a global plan.
What's the best way to stay connected when traveling internationally? Skyroam is a portable Wifi hotspot that I discovered recently. It has been a lifesaver for me during my recent move from Madrid, Spain to Madrid. Here's a detailed description of this handy gadget and my experiences with it.
What is Skyroam and how does it work?
Skyroam, a mobile, pay-as you-go Wifi hotspot, provides unlimited data services. This small device can connect up to five devices at once for unlimited use. You, your friends, and/or family can all connect their wireless phones, tablets, and laptops. You can connect while on the move without having to purchase SIM cards or search for free Wi-Fi.
Skyroam uses Virtual SIM technology to connect to local networks in over 100 countries. Skyroam can still connect to the tower in your destination and provide coverage, even if you are traveling throughout multiple countries. Skyroam doesn't require any special subscriptions or accessories. Simply turn the device on, connect it, and you're good to go. It's as easy as that.
WHAT TYPES OF DATA DO YOU HAVE?
Skyroam offers unlimited data for a 24-hour period. These 24-hour periods are called day passes. This works like this: from the moment you activate a day pass, you have unlimited data for 24 hour. So, if I activate a daypass at 11:33 am, I will have unlimited data until 11:33 the next day. You can either activate another day pass after the expiration of your day pass or wait until you need it again to activate it.
4G is the most common data speed. If there is heavy usage, however, the connection speed will drop to 2G within 24 hours. It is sufficient for surfing the internet, checking email, using social media apps, calling, and texting.
WHAT IS THE SKYROAM FEES?
Skyroam offers two options. Skyroam offers two options. You can either buy the device right away or rent it. Skyroam hotspots are best rented if you're traveling for only a few days. Unlimited internet is available for $9.95 per day. The price drops to $8 per Day if you purchase 5 or more days of passes.
Skyroam Hotspots are a great option for frequent or long-term travelers. They cost $99 and come with 3 day passes. A pass bundle will get you $8 off per day. The best thing about this plan is the fact that you don't have to pay a daily fee, regardless of whether you use WiFi or otherwise. Skyroam hotspot devices are only charged for what you use.
Hidden fees and charges are another thing that you don't have to worry about. You pay your flat fee, regardless of whether you rent or purchase the device.
What IS THE BATTERY LIFE LIKE?
It is vital to have a long battery life. What good is a device that dies every few hours? Skyroam has a 8 hour battery life. You will receive a micro USB cable that you can connect to your computer or to other USB ports to charge the device.
Skyroam offers global coverage in over 100 countries. You can see the complete list here.
MY EXPERIENCE SKYROAM
As I said, I recently moved from Los Angeles to Madrid. Although it was a hectic time, thanks to Skyroam, I was able to keep in touch with my family while on my trip. It was truly a lifesaver.
Let me explain.
When I arrived in Madrid, I decided to stay in an Airbnb until finding a place of my own. It was difficult to find a flat at this time of the year. All university students are searching for flats. It's true. It was difficult, to put it mildly. A few of my new friends and I took to the streets to search for fliers on apartment buildings and numbers to help us find a place to live. Without Skyroam, this would have been impossible. My poor Spanish was not enough to translate. Google maps was able to help me navigate when my poor direction sense led me astray. It was easy to surf apartment rental websites as I walked through Madrid's streets. The app even worked underground! After a few days, I was unable to find a SIM card and I resorted to Skyroam. The service of Skyroam's SIM card provider was/is terrible. It cost me 20 Euro for 2GB data.
It's been amazing! It's easy to use, which is why I love it! It's as simple as turning it on and activating a day pass. Unlimited WiFi is a rare find. The device worked flawlessly every day. I didn't have any issues with speed, connection, battery life, or connectivity, even though there were many devices connected. My gadget would charge at night and be ready for use the next morning.
The Skyroam hotspot makes a great investment if you want to travel internationally and stay connected.
